Local Financing Options

Local banks can be helpful resources for researching the best interest rates and loan terms for solar and energy efficiency projects. Some banks offer specific energy efficiency or solar loans, while others consider these to be home equity loans.

Additionally, many solar and energy service providers are familiar with available programs and loans that customers can utilize to finance solar and efficiency projects. Ask providers if they offer short term bridge loans that can cover installation costs expected to be recouped through tax credits, or other low interest rate loans specifically designed for energy improvement projects. Some financing options are installer specific, and NYSERDA incentives and financing are only available to contractors participating in the program.

New York State

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, known as NYSERDA, promotes energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. NYSERDA offers several types of financing for solar and energy efficiency projects, including On-Bill Recovery Loans structured around your current utility bills (so you never pay more per month than you are currently paying) and Smart Energy Loans. NYSERDA's website offers the most current information about rates and approval criteria for solar and energy efficiency projects as well as financing options and incentives for solar PV installations through their NY-Sun program.

NYSERDA also offers a reduced cost home energy assessment through its Home Performance with Energy Star program.

State and Federal Tax Credits

In addition to incentive program and financing options, you may qualify for NY State and/or Federal tax credits for installing solar at your home. These solar tax credits and eligibility criteria are detailed on NYSERDA's website. Additional incentives are available through Affordable Solar to customers that earn less than 80% of the median income in the area.
